Petrochemicals

Materials that perform under pressure.

When components are essential for safety, customers in the petrochemical industry qualify Metallus materials to ensure reliability.

Through detailed qualification processes, in depth discussions with end users on specifications, and rigorous testing procedures, the offering Metallus provides to the petrochemical industry ensure a safe product. The Metallus offering ensures that products manufactured by Metallus and our partners are sure to adhere to ASME codes and standards.

Why Metallus?

For some applications, Metallus was the forefather of the material technology used throughout decades of petrochemical production.

Applications

Our well established supply chains and highly engineered and qualified steels support critical applications in the petrochemical market, including those featured below.

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Tubing

Metallus has partnered with A&A Machine & Fabrication to build a supply chain, offering fully assembled low density polyethylene reactors to support up to 15m production in the petrochemical industry.  The high-pressure tubes that Metallus provides alongside A&A are one of the very few globally qualified materials for this highly critical component.

Pressure Vessel Piping

Metallus’ seamless mechanical tubing offers extensive size capabilities for heavy-wall applications like pressure vessels. Tubing can be used in a variety of applications, including piping systems, fittings, flanges, and valves.

Case Study

  • Testing Data

Metallus produced LDPE reactor tubing was high pressure tested to demonstrate our capability.  This high pressure testing established the failure mode for our alloy steel relative to the finish tube geometry (OD and Wall).  The desired outcome was a leak before burst condition versus catastrophic failure as defined by ASME Section VIII Division 3 Article KD-3.

The results of this testing are shown in the table to the left and are reported as Salteq (ksi) as a function of cycles to failure, with Salteq being the effective uniaxial fully reversed stress amplitude that accounts for the combined effects of multi-axial loading and mean stress effects.

Metallus LDPE reactor tubing exceeded the design curve specified by ASME, which resulted in our addition to the approved vendor list at multiple major global LDPE licensors.
